I read the other two reviews and they were so negitive I almost did not try this game. I am glad I did it is on the order of games like Bluebeards Castle but without the big pauses when moving from scene to scene. Plus for me it is a Playfirst game and all of those have been good.
I usually only write reviews in here IF I've finished the game but I think its important I review this game anyways. When this game first came out, I absolutely HATED it. Back then I only liked Hidden Object SCENE games and this was an adventure game. That being said, I have become a huge fan of adventure games and so I decided I would take another look at this game since its more adventure, than hidden object. If you turn off the terrible music (seriously what were these developers thinking?) since there isn't voiceovers anyways and can get over the "now loading" scenes between rooms, its actually a pretty good game for new adventure players. I would have been interested in this game if I wanted to learn how to do adventure games. The plot is kind of corny but for a first time adventure game, this game could really help someone figure out how to do them because this game is kind of a no brainer. Yes, you have to use your brains a little but the objects are pretty simple to find laying around and the assistant gives you a task list which if you click basically tells you what to do and unlike most adventure games, this one is pretty linear. I won't be purchasing this game as I am a seasoned adventure player now BUT I definitely recommend this to people who want to start exploring adventure games. I give this 3.5 stars.
I also nearly didn't try the demo, due to the bad reviews. The last reviewer persuaded me to give it a go, and I'm glad they did! I found it to be a very relaxing game, thanks to the soft (but occasionally a bit creepy# music and appealing graphics. Also, the items weren't that hard to find. The artwork was good enough for the intro and cut scenes, and I found the 'moving drawings' quite endearing. The only reason that I didn't buy the game, was that I 'd pretty much finished it #I think# by the time the demo ended. Go on, give it a try!
At this point, I no longer care whether a game is even all that good. I just wish that the HOGs would go away forever. I feel like its my duty as a gamer to find, buy & support the guys who are not flooding the casual pc & mac gaming world with the sewage that is the hundreds or maybe now thousands of spooky hidden object games. Escape From Frankenstein's Castle - above all else - is not a hidden object game and thats all I care about. I bought it without even trying out a demo once I heard it had no things to look for. Its simply despicable what has happened to the casual gaming scene today.
I must say I liked this game. Something different. Yes, it looked like an older game. None of the sound effects, morphing objects, etc. However, I enjoyed the way the game played out. You and your fiance crash your motorcycle, are brought into Frankenstein's castle, and meet the ghost of another girl who had the same fate many years ago. There are achievements to earn and a journal with tasks that are fun. There is no map but it's easy to find your way around and you are basically told what to do and where to go, so there's no wandering around. There are no HOS per se, however, you do need to pick up items that you need to complete tasks. The music is horrible, the voices are horrible LOL. However, something about the game intrigued me.
I had been looking forward to this game before it arrived. Unfortunately I found this game almost mind numbingly easy. Nothing really to figure out. Just collecting and using. The steps lead right from one to another and once you've picked up something it is apparent, quite quickly, what you need to do with it. The spectre that is your hint system basically tells you exactly what you need to do as opposed to just nudging. The graphics are really quite nice but the story line is almost silly. You wake up from an accident, a ghost talks to you, are put to work repairing odd machines and you aren't worried about what is going on? In just the first hour I had gone through a little over 1/2 the game. Needless to say it's not a long offering. Although there was loading between scenes I didn't seem to have the long lag time others encountered. In fact, for me, they were quite quick. But a heads up none the less. If you are just jumping into the adventure genre than this would probably be a great game for you. Not for me as it just seemed in the last hour I was just going through the motions. I did want to add that this is not labled correctly. It is not a HOG in any sense. Definitely an "Adventure". (original review Sep 2, 10)
I found this game quite a good game but I feel the time taken between scenes and rooms detracted from the enjoyment and the continuity. Some of the scenes appeared to have darker places which made a good deal of the hidden objects hard to locate or discern, but others were no problem finding. A few of the puzzles and mini games were quite tricky and required a bit of nous to figure out, but others were a pleasure to play and very entertaining. I feel that the only aspect of this game preventing me giving four or even five stars, was the time lapse between scenes which was quite frustrating.
It's amazing how much games have improved. I bought this game in September 2010, and had greatly enjoyed. Today, playing again ... I completely changed my mind: this game really don't have the same careful and neat production of current games. Graphics are not very well done, the story, the level of challenge and entertainment are completely outdated. And music ... awful! Sometimes have voice over, others do not ... and hasn't animation ... just drawings, not at all enthusiastics. Don't have HOS, the objects are scattered around the house ... and soon are used. Instead of hint button, you click the ghost, or task list, and appears exactly what you should do or find. In 2010 I bought it to play till the end ... Today I could not stand more than 20 minutes playing. Well, Thankfully Games Have Changed ...for much better !!
